When Shopping for a Kids ATV, Safety First

A Kids ATV can be great fun, but shop carefully and take precautions.

While pocket bikes and pocket rockets are not really ideal for most children, kids can still have fun on a kids ATV.

Though kids ATV’s are meant for kids, there are still some safety guidelines that should be followed when purchasing and operating these miniature vehicles.

First, choose the style of kids ATV that will best suit the child that will be operating it. A kids ATV is simply a mini version of an adult ATV. Each different type is designed for the age and size of the rider who will operate it.  Even the motors are sized to match the age of the rider because federal laws dictate what size ATV a person can operate based on their age. For riders aged 6-12, the engine size should be no larger than 50 cc (cubic centimeters). For riders aged 12-16 the engine should be no larger than 90 cc. Any engine over 90 cc should be reserved for people aged 16 or older.

Another thing to look at when purchasing a kids ATV is its ease of use. Some come with automatic transmissions, which make them easier to operate for smaller children. Kids ATVs that come with an oil injection system will make it easier to mix the fuel and oil as needed to run the vehicle.

Differences Between Full Size and Kids ATV’s

Check out the different controls on the various models. For instance, some have two different types of throttle and starter controls and some have only one. Some people prefer one or the other. If you want your child to learn how to use the controls that come standard on a particular adult ATV, look for a kids ATV that has those similar controls. This will make transitioning to that adult ATV much easier.

Do not purchase a kids ATV that doesn’t have floorboards. Floorboards protect kids’ feet from wheels. Also do not purchase a kids ATV that doesn’t have headlights. While the headlights on them are not very powerful they do provide some light — and thus make them more visible — when using them at night or during cloudy weather. Besides, it is good practice to have an ATV that has headlights.

Also be aware that suspension on a kids ATV is much lower than on an adult ATV. Kids ATVs are fine for riding over smaller bumps, but big jumps could damage the ATV and hurt your child. Take that into consideration when looking at what model you want.

Kids ATV Precautions

After picking the model that will safely and legally suit your child, choose safety gear. A helmet and pads should be purchased, no matter where the child will be riding. Also remember that kids learn best by example. If you do not wear a helmet while riding an ATV, your child won’t either. Children should always be monitored when riding an ATV. In fact, most ATV related injuries suffered by children happen when they are not wearing the proper safety gear and when they are not being supervised.

Finally, after getting the ATV and the safety gear needed, read the manuals on each of the products you have bought. Familiarize yourself with the ATV and the gear so that you know how everything should work. With a little research and planning, your child can ride a kids ATV safely and still have fun.
