Pocket Rocket Safety Recommendations For Kids

Pocket rockets can be great fun for kids if used safely.

A pocket rocket is a miniature-sized version of a street bike.

Due to their small size (averaging 20 inches tall and 38-48 inches in length) many people think they are meant for kids. However, pocket rockets are very fast, some able to go 65 miles per hour depending on the size of its rider. The original intent for a pocket rocket is not for child use.

Pocket rocket and mini-bike racing is one of the fastest growing motor-sports in America and Europe. These bikes may look like toys, but they are meant to be handled safely and professionally. That doesn’t mean you can’t allow your child to ride a pocket rocket, however. Anyone, adult or child, wishing to purchase a pocket rocket should read the specifications and recommendations of each model.

An Electric Pocket Rocket May Be Safer

Pocket rockets come in hundreds of makes and models, and they are all much cheaper than their larger counterparts. They come in gas and electric forms. Electric pocket rockets are cheaper and slower, which makes them better for smaller children. Gas bikes are faster, easier to operate and use little gas (roughly 40 miles a tank). To get started, look at the types of models each of these forms offers and decide what will be best for the rider.

Also, look into the size you prefer. To make the best decision, think of the size of the rider, where it will be stored and where it will be used. Pocket rockets, like all mini motor bikes have to be ridden on private property, a closed lot or go-kart tracks. Riding them in a neighborhood or street is not recommended for any model (and is illegal inmost states), gas or electric because their size makes it hard for motorists to see them properly.

Pocket Rocket Safety Training

After deciding what model is best for your child based on the specifics of the model, train your child on the proper safety of the bike. Take time to familiarize yourself with the bike and read the manual. Pay attention to any warnings listed in the manual and always use proper safety equipment, like a helmet and pads. Always supervise children that are riding a pocket rocket. Be sure to get copies of local laws pertaining to the operation of mini-bikes.

Perhaps one of the best rules to follow when purchasing a pocket rocket is buying from a reputable dealer. Since the sport of racing mini-bikes has become so popular in the past decade, there are hundreds of retailers that sell pocket rockets. Unfortunately, not all of them are reputable and buying a bike from a dealer who doesn’t know the product being sold or who lies about the condition of a bike can put people in danger. Research each seller before buying anything.

While pocket rockets were not originally intended for children, it doesn’t mean children can’t enjoy them. With the proper bike, safety equipment, training and supervision, children can safely enjoy pocket rockets.  A selection of electric pocket rockets and other pocket bikes are available at Amazon.
